Today at the Cannes Film Festival, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced that MUBI — formerly known as The Auteurs — will be coming to the PlayStation 3 this fall. Think of MUBI as Netflix programmed by Roger Ebert, Pauline Kael and Martin Scorsese.

Although the larger MUBI service remains available throughout the world, the PlayStation 3 partnership will only be available in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Australia, New Zealand and the other countries where SCEE has dominion.

The MUBI PS3 app will be very much like the Netflix app. Once downloaded, users will be able to browse available films and then watch them either à la carte or pay for an unlimited monthly subscription. Some films will also be available to watch for free. Individual rentals are available for seven days.

In LittleBigPlanet 2, you will be able to share content directly to your friends or browse a cloud of tags just like you would on content-sharing websites like Flickr and YouTube. Levels and other content will be tagged and rated by the players who try them out. You’ll have the option to sort through the most popular and most highly rated stuff that users create.

Once you find a game or level you’re interested in, you’ll play it either alone or with friends who are online.

The original LittleBigPlanet — which garnered a “universal acclaim” Metacritic rating of 95 — included many of these web and social media-inspired features, but it limited players to creating Mario-style levels.

That didn’t stop players from coming up with creative and unexpected applications, though. One player created a fully-functioning calculator using interconnected components that towered into the digital sky. Others made musical compositions by lining up sound effect triggers through which any player could run.

The sequel’s tools will be greatly expanded to encourage this kind of creativity; they’ll enable users to create experiences that aren’t platform games and compose musical pieces and video presentations. The calculator that took up an entire level in the first LittleBigPlanet will fit on a small, in-game microchip of sorts, just one piece of a larger level. All of the two million LittleBigPlanet levels will continue to be playable in the sequel, too.

Media Molecule released a trailer and several screen shots to accompany the announcements. And the song in the trailer is “Sleepyhead” by Passion Pit in case you were wondering!

Foursquare, the location based check-in start-up, is doing an incredible job at making itself known in all circles. I’m genuinely impressed.

This time, it’s football (soccer to you Americans) and the company has partnered with Umbro, a sports clothing manufacturer, to bring Foursquare to the sporting masses.

A post on the company blog is urging fans attending the Manchester City vs Tottenham match on Wednesday to use Foursquare to check in.

It’s a really cool new toy to play with, and we want to see if we make a little bit of history at Eastlands on Wednesday night. We want to create the biggest number of people all checking in the same place that Foursquare has seen so far. The biggest total up to now is only a few hundred people, so with 48,000 crammed into the City Of Manchester Stadium, we should be in with a great chance of breaking the record.

Now, the chance of all 48,000 fans reading that blog post is slim to none but who knows how else they’re promoting it. Even if just a few thousand people run with it in the space of two hours, it’s a record breaker – almost certainly for a number of check-ins per hour.

The current record for a day is 275,000 check-ins a day, broken during SXSW (which had around 12,000 attendees). I wonder if a few football hooligans, sorry I mean fans, can help shatter that records. That is, if it can stay up.

Researchers from the University of British Columbia have designed this new personal cubic head-coupled 3D display which allows you to play around with and manipulate 3D scenes from multiple angles.

Could this new tech point the way to what we might see in the Nintendo 4DS in 2015 perhaps?

Gleaming the cube

You can interact with the cube in 4 different ways – you can view a static 3D scene, navigate through a large landscape, play with colliding objects inside a box or use a stylus to manipulate objects that look like they are truly within this magic cube.

Billy Lam, Ian Stavness, Ryan Barr and Sidney Fels are the researchers who have designed a this impressive new 3D cube, called, rather strangely ‘the pCubee’.
