According to sources close to Apple, the company will be introducing multitasking support to the iPhone in its 4.0 firmware release.

Whether Apple will allow for similar functionality on the iPad is unknown. The lack of multitasking in the device has been a major point of complaint among users of the iPhone, and of potential purchasers of the future iPad. Both gadgets only allow for one application to be used at a time, something that Microsoft has been poking fun at recently.

The only complaint that we have heard more times than the lack of multitasking, is the exclusion of Flash from Apple mobile devices. Apple will not move from that point, but on this front it will give that market what it has long been asking for.

Anyone and everyone who has jailbroken their iPhone has had multitasking for some time, as the iPhone can support it quite simply. Apple has merely been blocking a simple software fix. Why?

Explanations tend to center around battery life and phone performance. More applications running will lead to lower battery life, and already taxed mobile processors might not be able to handle the load. However, with the newer, more powerful iPhone 3GS only one of the issues remains problematic.

It is very late, but as they say, better late than never.

Many Twitter users are experiencing a problem today – their timelines haven’t updated in hours and as of yet there’s been no word from Twitter HQ.

At 8.35 GMT (over six hours ago at the time of writing) new tweets dried up for me and (judging by a Twitter search) lots of other users.

Not all accounts are affected and even those who are can still happily tweet and see replies – still it’s a major problem and is crippling Twitter for many.

This is a familiar problem – Twitter has these glitches from time-to-time – but after six hours you’d have thought Twitter might have noticed and updated their Status Blog with a reassuring update that they were aware of the problem and were working on a solution. Alas no, they’re silent.

As Twitter becomes a utility for increasing numbers of people, it really can’t afford to be complacent with service faults. The fault may have emerged in the middle of a weekend night at Twitter HQ in California but do they not have 24-hour service engineers? If not, why not?

Currently, the UK Apple website still shows US pricing and a footnote reading: “Please note, pricing is in US dollars. International pricing will be announced at a later date.”

The unconfirmed source reported that the tablets would be priced as follows:

16GB WIFI will cost £389

32GB WIFI will cost £439

64GB WIFI will cost £489

There were no indications of how much the tablets with both WIFI and 3G would cost but there were suggestions that UK consumers can expect the iPad to launch in April.

We will update as soon as we hear anything more official.
